Was The Mysterious Death Of Amy Robsart Really An Accident? Or Something Worse?
Amy Robsart - or by her married name, Amy Dudley - is most famous, sadly, for her death. On the 8th September 1560, Amy was found dead at the foot of a flight of stairs, apparently having broken her neck. Her inquest was death by accident, but due to her husband Robert Dudley being the favourite of Elizabeth I, rumours began that her death might actually be murder. This video takes a look at the parts of Amy's life that get forgotten, and the different scenarios regarding her tragic passing...

🇬🇧 Thomas Parry, Elizabeth's Comptroller at Hatfield wrote that even when Elizabeth was 14yrs old she announced she'd never marry anyone as she had seen so many downfalls & betrayals due to marriage power climbing. If she ever became Queen she'd never marry & only have married courtiers around her. Her rule of England would be hers alone. She'd never allow a man to rule with her, she'd witnessed too much over her young life & was wily & extremely careful. It's said Elizabeth did indeed like Rbrt Dudley but was content he was married as she knew he was very ambitious, but enjoyed keeping him dangling. I doubt anyone will ever know the truth of Amy's death, I personally think it was an accident. Btw, it's wasn't William Cecil who Conceived of Elizabeth's spy ring but Walsingham, her spy master who Created an intricate Spy Network & supposedly where the sobriquet of 007, super spy came from. Also anyone interested in the Kett rebellion of Norwich in Edward V1 time should read a marvellous book ( which I'm oddly re reading at this moment) By author CJ Sanson & involving his Created character Matthew Shardlake, Lawyer, he retells in amazing detail the start to finish real history Of Robert Ketts Rebellion. This book called Tombland & is 800 pages with a very good addendum of the historical points& Comprehensive detail of this not well known event in British History It's incredible reading & I've read it Now, 3 times despite its length. its well recommended. thanks for this Amy Robsart video. Peace x

Thank you so much for doing this! I have known of Grace O'Malley since 1980 when one of my favourite authors, Bertrice Small, began a series called the Skye O'Malley Saga. She drew from the real life experiences of Grace O'Malley and incorporated historically related incidents in this series. Ms Small, whose descriptive abilities, in my opinion, are right up there with Mr Charles Dickens', brought that era to life, especially with descriptions of the clothing, the fabrics, the food, the parties, and feasts, etc! Yes, there were very saucy and bawdy scenes in all of the novels, but the main focus really was the history! Many years ago when my mother was near her death (it was a very peaceful passing), she asked me if I would read some of Skye O'Malley for her. 💜 If anyone appreciates historical romance, please pick these books up and have a read. They are not trash like some romance novels are that have a touch of history. These are more like history with touches of romance! Thank you again for this video! 💜💜💜 P.S. your voice and the graphics that go along with these videos are just amazing. They completely pull you into whatever story you are discussing at the moment.

She was NOT stupid. She was a kid at the time and was NOT thinking about the worst case scenario when it came to her actions. Most teenagers which Catherine was at the time don't think about consequences for their actions. They can't unlike adults see around corners or think 20 steps ahead of what they are doing in the present. I mean we were all teenagers at one time in our lives. They all don't think 20 steps ahead of what they are doing at the present. She clearly didn't and it cost her her life.

Losing her mother at such a tender age might have had something to do with this. The earliest known painting of young Princess Elizabeth by Holbein was when she was 13, judging by her expression in this she had appeared to have been sexually abused!

THe Showtime tv program, "The Tudors", portrays the interviews of and finaggling of getting all this info to Henry via laying that note on his chair being conducted by a group of courtiers and led by Bishop Gardner. Cranmer really set this young girl up....WHY? Was he bored after all the machinations of being the center of the hive getting rid of the 1st Catherine?

I think you vastly underestimate the distress of being childless that Amy would have experienced at a time when securing a heritage for a husband through providing children was the fundamental role of a woman. This would also have undoubtedly affected Robert's view of his wife, exacerbated by his being the Queen's favourite at court. To my mind, the likelihood of an "accident" is remote, given Amy's clearing of the house, so either she was so distressed that she committed suicide (despite it being a mortal sin then so arguably much less likely than today) or she requested privacy for a private meeting engineered by the person who eventually actually killed her. Would she have felt that she needed to keep a visit from her own husband secret? I doubt it. Who does that leave?

I have always thought that it was either Amy herself or Cecil. Amy was suffering terribly and she was totally abandoned by her husband, killing herself would finally give her peace with the added bonus of giving her revenge against Robert and Elizabeth beyond her grave, she would have known her scandalous death would have dashed the posibility of the 2 lovers marriage. If it was Cecil, well he was beyond disgusted with the idea of dudley marrying the Queen, so he would see it as doing it for the realm's greater good

I think this was a terrible accident. I feel she was ill and wanted her household to go out and enjoy the day and the fair. She didn't want to be a burden to anyone. Perhaps Amy desired some solace to herself. All the physical evidence recorded at the time is consistent with such a fall. People take terrible and fatal tumbles down flights of stairs all the time even to this day. I don't think Cecil or Dudley had anything to do with this. Nor do I believe she parished by her own hand. I think the rumor mill conjured up all sorts of nonsense. Both Robert and Cecil had many enemies. Queen Elizabeth also possessed a treasure trove of enemies. Such gossip was drummed up at some aim towards one of these individuals. Perhaps all of them were the object of distain. Mainly focusing towards Elizabeth. Calling out her favorite or one of her closest ministers for sinister acts were all designed to be a blight on the queen's name to have such associates. This is just an unfortunate and tragic accident. 💔👑💔

    • @HistorysForgottenPeople
